Fund raising, whether directly or indirectly, and related activities is taking up more and more of my thinking. You can go on and on about the motherhood and apple pie-ness of libraries, but the difficult truth is that someone has to make it possible to pay the bills. And, even just standing still costs more each year in library land.
We just complete donor recognition weekend where major donors are thanked, praised, courted and, in the end, asked to give more. One event in schedule was a speaker on raising philanthropic children by creating a culture of giving early in a child's life.
This reminds me of KCD's philanthropy program/course for high school students where they learn to select a worthy recipient of their funds.
I wonder if these cultures of philanthropy are of as much interest to parents and children in lower income groups.
